Development of a 550 kV oil-impregnated paper dry-type bushing as an import substitute has been successfully completed.

On October 26, the 550 kV extra-high-voltage oil-impregnated paper dry-type bushing independently developed by Nanjing Electric passed the type test for bushings conducted by the China Academy of Electrical Sciences. This bushing is designed to replace products from the imported HSP company and boasts a world‑leading level of technological sophistication.
In December 2019, Nanjing Electric signed a research contract with the Guiyang Bureau of the Ultra-High Voltage Transmission Company of China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd. for the development of an imported‑substituting HSP ultra‑high‑voltage product: a 550 kV oil‑impregnated paper dry‑type bushing. This project was designated as a key R&D initiative for the company in 2020. Compared with conventional 550 kV dry‑type bushings, the new 550 kV oil‑impregnated paper dry‑type bushing features a smaller outer diameter and a shorter length for its oil‑filled insulation. The compact dimensions of the oil‑filled insulation pose additional challenges to both the design and manufacturing processes.
Through the tireless efforts of the Design, Production, Operations, Procurement, and Quality Inspection departments, the development, design, and manufacturing of this bushing were completed in nine months. From October 20 to 26, 2020, the Wuhan Branch of China Electric Power Research Institute Co., Ltd. was commissioned to conduct type tests on the bushing at our company, with relevant experts from China Southern Power Grid invited to witness the testing process. With seamless collaboration across all departments, the type tests were successfully concluded.
The test results demonstrate that the product exhibits excellent electrical, mechanical, and thermal performance, with its insulation withstand capability, partial discharge characteristics, temperature rise, and other key parameters all meeting the requirements of the relevant technical specifications and standards. The successful development of this bushing represents both a research-and-development challenge and an enhancement of production capacity for Nanjing Electric, marking the company’s attainment of internationally leading capabilities in the design, manufacturing, and testing of ultra‑high‑voltage products.
