Nanjing Electric’s 1‑million‑volt hollow composite insulator successfully passed its electrical tests on the first attempt at the Institute of Electrical Engineering’s Yangbajing test site.

On October 9, the million‑volt hollow composite insulator, independently developed by Nanjing Electric (Group) High‑Tech Materials Co., Ltd., successfully passed high‑altitude electrical testing in a single trial at the Yangbajing Test Base of the China Academy of Electrical Sciences.
Nanjing Electric (Group) High‑Tech Materials Co., Ltd. undertook the research and development of “ultra‑high‑voltage hollow composite insulators” within the project “Industrialization of High‑Altitude Transmission Equipment Bushings and Domestication of Raw Materials for the Southwest Power Grid,” which was verified and implemented by the UHV Department of State Grid Corporation of China and the China Academy of Electrical Sciences. To ensure timely completion, the company responded swiftly, successively finalizing the product process flow and structural design, and formulating a detailed project implementation plan, a production‑process schedule, and procurement plans for equipment and related materials. Adopting a liquid silicone rubber manufacturing process, and through meticulous organization and scientific execution, the company—thanks to the diligent efforts of all functional departments and its employees—overcame numerous adverse factors, including the pandemic and power‑rationing restrictions. By early August 2021, it had delivered prototype samples of both AC one‑million‑volt ultra‑high‑voltage hollow composite insulators for transformer bushings and for GIS bushings, and on September 18, 2021, these samples were promptly dispatched to the Yangbajing Test Base in Tibet.
The sample was assembled at the test site on October 5 and the tests officially commenced on October 6, concluding on October 9. The wet‑operating impulse withstand test passed at 1950 kV, while the operating impulse voltage tests conducted under various grading‑ring conditions yielded results ranging from 2050 kV to 2300 kV.
